差や違いを説明する場面はたくさんありますよね。
- AとBは○○が異なる
- ～には違いがある
- ～によって異なる
difference という単語自体は中学校で習いますが、「～に（の点で）違いがある」という時と、「AとBの違い」という時では後ろに取る前置詞が違います。英作文でもこの前置詞のミスは地味に多いです。
今回は、difference の使い方はもちろん、「～によって異なる」という条件説明に便利な depending on や according to も含め、差や違いの説明に便利な表現を整理します。
違いを語ることは日常でも多いと思いますので、ぜひ基本的な表現はマスターしてしまいましょう。
基本の単語：difference, different, differ
差・違いを表す基本の単語は difference（名詞）, different（形容詞）, differ（動詞）です。
どの品詞を使うと書きやすいかは内容によりますが、どれも使えるようにしましょう。
特に動詞の differ を使うと短く端的に書けることは多いです。いつも different を使ってしまいがちな人は、ぜひ differ を積極的に使ってみてください。
【名詞】difference
「AとBには違いがある」のように二者間を比較したい時は、between A and B（＝AとBの間に）を使います。
There are many cultural differences between Osaka and Tokyo.
大阪と東京では文化的な違いがたくさんあります。
between の後ろは必ず A and B じゃないといけない訳ではありません。
「グループ間で」「二者間で」など、「○○の間で」と言いたい時はありますよね。下のように、between ○○ と使うのももちろんOKです。
No notable differences were observed between the two groups.
両群間に顕著な差は見られなかった。
３つ以上のものを比較するときに between を使うのが嫌いな人もいます。between でもいいですが、３つ以上のときは among が使えます。
また、「○○に違いがある」「○〇においての違い」という時は、前置詞の in を使って difference in ○○ と表します。of を使う人がたくさんいますので注意しましょう。
We found substantial differences in the prevalence of low back pain among occupations.
腰痛の有病率には、職業によって大きな違いがあることがわかりました。

【形容詞】different
上で見たルールは、形容詞の different を使う時もまったく同じです。
The climates are very different between Hokkaido and Okinawa.
北海道と沖縄では気候が大きく異なります。
The proportion of youth is quite different between the two cities.
若者の割合は、両市でかなり差がある。
The two products are different in size, though they share essential functions.
この2つの製品は、本質的な機能は同じですが、大きさが異なります。
The offline vs. online process is quite different in the amount of time required.
オフラインとオンラインでは、所要時間がかなり異なります。
「○○とは違う」というときは、different from ○○ とします。
His dialect is very different from mine.
彼の方言は私のとは全然違う。
The healthcare system in Japan is quite different from that in the United States.

【動詞】differ
動詞の differ の場合も、between, among, in, from などはこれまで見たのと同じルールで使います。
Healthcare systems significantly differ between countries.
医療制度は国によって大きく異なります。
The male-to-female ratio vastly differs among industries.
男女比は業界によって大きく異なります。
These products primarily differ in size.
これらの製品は、主にサイズが異なります。
Prices of e-books may differ from those of paper versions.
電子書籍の価格は、紙の書籍と異なる場合があります。
＜おまけ＞ differentiate
differ の派生語に differentiate という動詞もあります。「～を区別する・差別化する」という他動詞です。
differentiate A from (and) B の形で使うことが多いです。「AとBを区別する」という意味です。
It is difficult to differentiate benign from malignant.
良性と悪性の鑑別は困難である。
You should differentiate ideal and reality.
理想と現実の区別をつけるべき。
These two look alike, so I cannot differentiate them.
この2つは同じように見えるので、区別がつきません。
differ の類義語
vary = 変わる、変化する
differ の類義語で大事なのが vary です。「変わる、変化する、異なる」という意味です。
「変わる」だから change と近いと思う人がいるかもしれませんが、「変動する・異なる」という意味合いなので、differ の方が近いと思います。
The trends varied across age groups.
年齢層によって傾向は異なりました。
The shipping charges vary depending on destinations.
送料はお届け先により異なります。
The prices of smartphones vary vastly between products.
スマートフォンの価格は製品によって大きく異なる。
Evaluations for our service varied considerably among evaluators.

various = 様々な
上で見た動詞の vary よりも、various（＝様々な）の方が馴染みがあるかもしれませんね。

参加者はさまざまな都道府県から集まった。
I want to travel to various countries.
いろいろな国を旅してみたい。
variety = 多様さ、種類
名詞の variety は「多様さ」という意味です。
This school values fostering variety among students.
この学校は、生徒の多様性を育むことを大切にしています。
Variety is the spice of life.
変化は人生のスパイスです。
“a variety of” で、「様々な、多種多様な」という意味です。このフレーズで使うことが多いかもしれません。
There are a variety of treatment options for this symptom.
この症状には、さまざまな治療法があります。
This restaurant provides a variety of vegetable dishes.
様々な野菜料理を提供するレストランです。
「～によって」「～次第」を表すフレーズ
depend on = ～次第である
depend on は、「～で決まる、～次第だ、～に依存する」という意味の句動詞です。
The overall risk depends on multiple factors.
総合的なリスクは複数の要因に依存します。
「～によって異なる」と言いたい時は、分詞にした depending on の形で使うことが多いです。vary や differ と一緒によく使います。
The portability varies depending on size.
携帯性はサイズによって異なります。
Disease severity can greatly vary depending on comorbid conditions.
病気の重症度は、併存疾患によって大きく異なります。
according to = ～に従って
「～に従って」という意味の according to も、「～によって異なる」という文脈で使えます。
The exact procedure varies according to the system.
具体的な手順は、システムによって異なります。

推奨摂取カロリーは、体重や運動習慣によって異なります。
The amount of time required differs according to the situation.
